Drive to Seward and our First Day

Today was an easy day. We drove to Soldotna since we wanted to get into the Seward early so we could snag a waterfront site. Seward is interesting. In the 60’s they were hit ith a Tsunami that wiped out their waterfront. The local leaders would not allow any buildings but did put in 300-400 campsites. Mostly boondock(no water, sewer or electric). No reservations except for the RV tours. This gave all the campers premier sites for a very low price($20). Primarily for the RV tours electric and water sites were put in but in a limited amount. Paying for all facilities owned by the town are all automated. There is a stanchion that takes cash or credit card, you register by license plate number. Parking, campsites and the dump station are all part of the same system. Worked well.

The drive to Seward was not the greatest, heavy smoke from our forest fire.
We arrived at around 9:30-10. This was planned as most people leave between 8-9 and we wanted a waterfront site. We were aiming for the Iditarod CG on a point of land that looked out on Resurrection Bay. This CG only had 9 sites plus a campground host who happened to be from San Antonio, Tom's home town

We pulled in and found a spot but not on the waterfront site. We unhitched and were getting ready to check out the other campgrounds. Heard an engine start so I walked over and asked if they were leaving. Yes!!! We waited until they left and ended up with a premier waterfront spot.

The rest of the day we checked things out, hit the supermarket and met the seal(Chester) and the otter(Otto) that hang around the water in front of the campground.

A Braided River, they are huge!!

Smoke impacted many of our views

Exit Glacier

Another braded river

Several buildings have very unique cedar shakes
We believe this is our seal, didn't see him very much

This is Otto, he loved entertaining us

I think he is asleep

He spends most of his time eating
